Nice -- but paper feed and ink cartridge problems |

I have had this printer about 4 years and use it for document and photo printing. Print quality is outstanding, especially for photos, although I have to increase the color output saturation about 20 percent. Features are great. I have had two problems. First, sometimes ink cartridges will falsely indicate they are out of ink. I re-seat the cartridges and sometimes that works for a few pages. I contacted Canon and they said it is a known cartridge problem and offered to replace offending cartridges for me. I only use Canon cartridges. Most cartridges are OK but some are not. The second problem deals with paper feed errors. I use the vertical feeder on the back of the printer for letter sized and keep the lower tray loaded with photo paper. The paper feed errors occur with letter sized paper. I always use new paper, 20 pound weight. I fan the paper when loading it, make sure it is straight, ensure the guides are correct but unfortunately way too often I get paper feed errors requiring removal of paper and re-starting the printer. This problem has gotten worse with age, although I have only used the printer moderately. I have tried different paper and still get print errors. I have not tried loading letter paper in the small tray since I keep photo paper in it. The drive mechanisms are clean so this is a mechanical paper feed problem. This printer is irritating me more and more and that is one reason why I am online looking for another printer, and was surprised that this unit is still being sold -- so I added this comment. |

Pleasant surprise-Does just what I want! |
I bought this machine used, advertised as working fine. I was not disappointed. It chugs away, doing what it was built to do very well.
I will admit, I wanted to get one of the Canon models that could be set up to print directly on inkjet-printable CD's, and the 6600D can be enabled to do so with the purchase of a Canon CD tray "C." The more recent models cannot be modified to do this, at least as I write this.
CD-printing is generally not enabled on US versions of the many Canon printers that possess this ability--patent issues, perhaps?
The CD-printing issue aside, I'm also tickled to watch this affordable printer suck paper in and out to print on two sides (the auto duplex feature) and I love having 2 different ways to feed paper, the automatic feeder up high and the cassette down under.
The automatic feeder on top is great because it bends the paper very little, if at all, and feeding of stock is helped by gravity. I printed some 4" by 6" photos, and sent them to my mom, who called today to say she liked them very much. Labels printed from the automatic feeder were precise and beautiful. No wasted labels!
The cassette feeder below seems to be mainly for plain paper and duplexing. It worked great also, printing out a lab report on 2 sides that I wanted to take with me to a doctor appointment.
As for the direct-CD printing, I followed the setup directions available on the internet, and ordered the tray.
Did it work? Yes it did. And all these years I've been labeling CD's with markers! First try looked great! What a great tool!

Garbage |

Expensive, small ink tanks. I don't use this printer much, but it didn't last even two years before the paper quit feeding. Even before that I had to remove the black ink cartridge every time I started the printer and then put it back in because the printer said it wasn't there. I bought this to replace a 7 year old Epson. Now, I am using the Epson again until I replace the junk Canon. I have owned several brands of printers. This is the most expensive to use, quickest dying printer I have ever had. Also, colors that print fine on other printers had an off-hue cast on the Canon. This was a mistake. I bought the Canon because I have used their cameras for 27 years. They don't make printers as well as Cameras. No more Canon printers for me. I am back to Epson or HP. |

CARTRIDGES DO NOT LAST LONG AND ARE TOO EXPENSIVE |
Considering the number of individual color cartridges in this printer, I expected a much higher quality print. The colors do not seem any better than my old HP printer, and that printer only had a tri color and black cartridge. It also cost much less. The cartridges do not last long and are quite expensive. Recently, I experienced two clogs in the print heads.
Long story short, I'd gladly sell this printer, but do not recommend it. |
