Editorial Reviews for  'Seagull 109, 6cm x 6cm Medium Format Twin Lens Reflex (TLR) Camera with Built-in 75mm f/3.5 Lens & Shutter/Aperture Window in Front of Viewfinder.'

Product Description
This camera is a step up from the 4A-107. For the first time in Seagull's history of Twin Lens Reflex Cameras, the photographer doesn't have to look away from his or her subject in order to adjust the aperture or the shutter speed on the camera. On the other models, you have to turn the camera towards you and change the speeds or aperture by looking at the front taking lens. This is where the controls are. On the 4A-109 camera, there are 2 knobs; one for the shutter speed and one for the aperture, these are located so that you can turn them as you are looking through the viewfinder. There is a small window directly in front of the viewfinder that allows you to view these settings so that you can see the changes as you turn the knobs. This a major improvement which every photographer will enjoy.

why would you buy this?
Seriously I bought this camera used once a while back. It was junk. For the same money or less you could go buy a yashica 635 or something similiar on ebay. Way better camera.

not happy
My product did not work right out of the box. The shutter release was broke. I will never buy on line again. I do not no how I will recoop my lost.I loaded the film to shoot a picture and the shutter pushed in and did not release.

Good starter camera for medium format photography
This camera was a birthday gift and I've been using it for nearly six months without any problems. It's very basic -- no metering, awkward viewfinder and focusing. The build quality is somewhat questionable -- it's still in one piece but after a week of ownership I notice some of the cover material started to peel away.
One can only shoot 120 format, so a user can have only 12 shots per roll. Be aware that this film format can be pricey and in some places difficult to have processed. But it is a fun camera and it's neat to take pictures in the larger format.

Not bad for entry, but lacking in some features.
The fact that this camera is still being made during the onslaught of digital tech is a feat in itself, and is a viable alternative to all the bells and whistles of your basic 3,4 or 5 megapixel camera. The quality of the lens is average and certainly useable, but it would be even better if you could change lenses on the fly to ones of different focal lengths ,such as a 110mm or 40mm to give you more options. Also I would like to see the option to change from 120 to 220 format in case I want to shoot more pics per roll. This is the case for Mamiya cameras of similar design. If my budget was so tight that I couldn't afford the used $300 Mamiya and I didn't want to deal with digital hassles, this Seagull GC-109 would definately be in the running for my camera dollars.

Buy One
I have recently purchased the Seagull GC-109 as an upgrade from my Nikon F60. Although the F60 is an outstanding camera i was not able to print the sizes i needed with the basic 35mm film. However now i am able to print large pictures without any distortion. Its amazing and really nice to use. I advice any one whos looking for an ugrade to buy one.
