Very pleased with this item |
|
This item is not to be found in stores - at least around here anyway. After a thorough search on foot I turned to Jas-store and much to my surprise was able to find the exact item immediately and NO SHIPPING. Item arrived very quickly and in perfect condition. Very pleased with item and supplier. Would definitely order this product again in the same way. |

delta 22-549 blades sharp enough to cut butter ??? |
delta's 13 inch planer is a medium duty planer with light duty knives. while the blade life is better than that of dewalt's 13 inch planer knives, it still falls far short of what a any professional wood worker would find acceptable regardless of the species of wood. delta's double sided, quick change concept is nice, as well as the laterally adjustable registry slots, which allows you to slide a single blade down a millimeter and continue using it even though it has a nick in it. the blade material seems to lose its edge fairly rapidly, even at light depth of cut. a planer costing almost five hundred bucks merits better cutters. either brazed carbide or indexable carbide blades would be nice.
UPDATE:
1) as I run lots of material, the poor blade life is a pain. realizing that as one reviewer and manufacturer said blades were not made to be resharpened, i never the less decided to try. took my blades to a couple of kitchen shops and found a knife sharpener that worked ok for MINOR blade touch ups. seemed to work quite well. count strokes on each blade, and realize you cant dress out nicks, ... you are really only trying to restore the sharp edge as on a knife, removing the "rollover" that usually shows up on knife microscopy.
2) have heard rumors that an aftermarket carbide indexable insert cutter is in the works for the small planer market, specifically the dewalt and delta 13" machines. this would be ideal for users that run higher quantities of material. if any one has the manufacturer, price and part number, please let us know. it would be a welcome addition to this otherwise really nice planer.
Oh, and by the way, following the recommendations of other reviewers, i waxed my in and out feed tables some time ago, ... really improved performance. i used a furniture paste wax and keep the tables waxed. |

This is a review of Jas-store, not this item |
I ordered this item from Jas-store. It took Jas-store 4 days to "say" they had shipped. It took another 4 days for the item to reach a USPS postal service in the same city (Atlanta). Jas-store of course claimed shipment prior to shipment which appears to have become their custom with my orders.
By the way, I would give the planer knives 3 stars. The 1 star rating is for Jas-store. |

Super sharp |
|
These baby's are super sharp when new. They make life so much easier when planning. They do not like nails, but no blade would. |

For the money I'm Happy |
This planer has served me well with the blades that came with it. I created an altar for my church that used several hard exotic woods. I planed a lot of wood. I haven't had to flip the blades over yet. I take light cuts and that seems to really extend the life compared to what other reviews have noted about blade wear.
I'm buying an extra set of blades just because I always like to have wear & tear items handy when you need them. |
