Jas-store.com Product Description |
|
The Eastern Tools and Equipment 2,700 watt portable generator has a 5 HP 196 cc engine with a 3-gallon fuel tank that delivers up to 7-hours of run time. The air-cooled engine produces less than 67-decibels at 17 feet, making this generator an ideal choice noise is a consideration. An automatic shutdown function for when oil pressure becomes dangerously low is provided, and the alternator is maintenance-free for worry-free operation. The mounting between the engine/alternator feet and the base frame reduces vibration and improves durability, and the non-fused breaker protects against AC overloads. The included DC 12-volt charging system powers car and boat batteries. The generator is backed by a 1-year limited warranty. |

Excellent value for emergency power |
I bought this for use when the power goes out, which happens all to often in recent years. Thirty years ago we had never had a power outage lasting more than a couple hours. The past ten years it seems like we have a multiple day outage once or twice a year.
It arrived double boxed, something I didn't expect for an item this size and weight. There was also a layer of 1/2" stryofoam between the boxes. The inner box was pristine.
A couple observations on the unit. The engine's top end is aluminum. This will help with heat dissipation but I'd suggest several frequent oil changes when the engine is breaking in. I'm going with 5 hours, 10 hours, 15 hours, then will change it every 24 hours of use. This will assure a long life. The engine seems to be decent quality.
The power outlets do not appear to be "ground fault" protected. I would stronly suggest purchase of a ground rod and coupling the generators ground lug to the rod BEFORE you start the unit. While the switch will keep power from the outlet, it appears from the included schematic the generator is "hot" all the time. If the outlet was clearly protected, I would have given this the full 5 stars.
Summary: Excellent value for the money BUT GROUND IT BEFORE STARTING.

BOA - Broken on Arrival |
Ordered this item for two reasons: The Price & it was being sold by Jas-store and not a 3rd party.
Item shipped sooner than I thought it would and arrived in a day using super saver shipping!
Unfortunately, it was broken on arriaval. The control panel you can see in the photos of the item is very cheap plastic and bolted to a metal frame. The box it ships in is a simple cardboard box without any supports. Add these two factors together and you are bound to see a broken control pannel. In my case the control pannel broke off of the frame and was hanging by the wires.
I called Jas-store and they said they will send a replacement item. We'll see if this one makes it. A simple modification to the shipping container would save this company a good deal of warranty calls!
I'll let you know how it works when the replacement arrives. |

Used twice and the pull start failed. |
I purchased this item on the 15th of December 2007 from another retailer.
Took it home and fired it up with little effort.
The price was good but I was a little apprehensive because sometimes you do get what you pay for.
A few weeks ago the power was out so I started the generator up and was pleased at how well it started.
Last weekend when the snow flew again here in Halifax and I readied the generator for the possible power outtage.
I pulled the start cord and it moved freely in my hand.
It would not turn over the engine.
The store would not take it back and now I am left with a generator that has to be shipped in order to have it serviced.
I guess in the end, one really does get what they pay for.
In all fairness it is probably a really simple fix but I just did not expect it to fail after just a couple uses.
If I had used it more than twice this review would never have happened.
Maybe you will have better luck with yours.
Cheers! |

not as advertised |
This generator was advertised as having 120/240 volt outlets. It DID NOT
have the 240 volt outlet,Jas-store replaced it with another identical
generator,so I had two generators to return.Jas-store said that I would
recieve a 20.00 credit on my account for the inconvenience, I never recieved it. |

It saved Thanksgiving |
I hunted around and I found this generator to be the best deal around. I bought this knowing that it was on the lower end of the scale, but I only need a generator during power outages. One of the first things I noticed when it was running, was that the was that the engine sounded pretty tight. There was no rattling or knocking, and the exhaust was not really loud. I expected it to be a lot louder. I had it about twenty feet way from the house and with the door closed you could hear it running, but it was nothing that was annoying. And if you are outside you could have a normal conversation, and not need to yell.
The day before Thanksgiving we got a noreaster and that knocked out power for eleven hours. During this time I was able to keep our full sized fridge running, and run a 27" tv, cable box(Lost power but the cable stayed on woo hoo!), and two lights. The generator never even hiccuped when power was needed. I alternated between the fridge, a chest freezer, and an electric heater, as well as a toaster , and a coffee pot. We were very happy to have this generator so we could keep the Thanksgiving food safe, stay warm, have coffee, and of course tv!
I ran the generator in 40 degree rainy weather. While it was raining I kept it in a shelter away from the house ( I used my kids little tykes playhouse with the door open to vent the exhaust and a tarp over the top)to stay dry. I started after two pulls and never gave me any problems. I guess the real test will come when it is 10 degrees and blowing snow. I will update later as to how that went.
All in all I would recommend this generator. The price is right, and you really can run alot of your household stuff on it. It makes life a little easier when the lights go out. |
