Great inverter with a few drawbacks |
This inverter is really convenient - and to the earlier reviewer, you're SUPPOSED to get a low voltage alarm like that! You should be putting something like 13V DC into this.
This unit has served admirably in a variety of vehicle applications for us. It has only two drawbacks in my opinion:
one: The wires actually screw down onto the end of the inverter - not with a screwdriver, just with a big thumb-operated screw. That's great - what's not so great is that enough metal is exposed that in theory if you weren't careful and laid a knife down across both contacts, you could create a short. The positive of this is, you can connect the battery alligator clips in the same way as the direct-to-lighter/power plug. I haven't had to use the battery alligator clips yet though - the power coming out of the lighter socket has been MORE than enough for my needs.
The other drawback, and the one that's a real PAIN, is that you have to hold down the power button until the LED's flash 888 to turn it on. Turn the car off to get gas? yep, you need to get to the inverter and hold the button down for a second to turn it back on. Unplug the inverter for a minute to plug something else in? yep, hold the button down.
This gets REALLY, REALLY annoying compared to other inverters I've had, where the on-off switch was a toggle, so you could have it automatically start up with the car. This is especially maddening when you think you're charging, but really you forgot to push the button or didn't hold it down long enough, and it's all completely dead!
So I'd say this is a pretty good product, worthy of a good review and possibly a purchase - but also with its own peccadilloes. The largest advantage of this unit is the power provided by the inverter for this price - I paid less than the Jas-store price at Costco, so you may want to check that out. In general, though, an inverter this powerful will have a higher price tag, so keep that in mind. |

Weak Product |
|
I bought this unit for a trip to Alaska in my RV which has deep cycle batteries intended for repeated recharging. The inverter works fine as long as the engine is running but when parked, the inverter's alarm goes off when the incoming voltage is 11.5 V. That makes it pretty useless for most of my needs. |
