Works with Windows 7 |
|
This item does work with Windows 7. Here is the issue....people think it doesn't work with windows 7 because when you are installing, it looks like the program freezes but it doesn't. Leave it alone and it takes up to 10 minutes or more to install. While it is installing, it will look like it froze but it doesn't. I have been using it on my Windows 7 computer for a few months now and I love this family tree program. It has made my searches so much easier. |

So far....NO good. |
|
I ordered this product directly from [...] about 6 months ago. I have tried a number of times to install it, but each time I get the "blue screen of death". I am terrified I am going to have something terrible happen to my computer or my FTM files...both of which are backed up...but still. If I can ever get this program installed, I will let you know how it works out for me. But so far....NO GOOD! |

Does the Job |
|
I am brand new to genealogy and Family Tree Maker makes it simple. It is very user friendly except I don't like the way it saves. It saves a new file every time instead of overwriting the old. Without using "help" or a tutorial I figured out how to use it. I also like the way it links up with [...] (don't like paying for that of course). Although I haven't begun to tap into what the program can do, I love it so far. |

Some Good, Some Bad, expensive |
I have been using Family Tree Maker for many years and six different versions. I think I started with version 4. My old version did not work when I got a new computer with Windows 7. I had to configure the program for 32 bit access on Windows 7 because it is unusable on 64 bit.
This version is constantly on line while you are working, and rapidly makes connections to documents and family trees. I like the documents, especially the census records, but most of the family trees are poorly documented and contain a lot of bad information, often names added by guesswork or wishful thinking. Web access is very expensive. Ancestry wants $20 to $25 a month for domestic membership and $25 to $30 for worldwide membership, depending on whether you purchase by the month or by the year.
If you are going to do any publications, it is almost impossible to get more than one page at a time in any format except the default format. I gave up after many attempts to create a 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 book instead of the default 8 1/2 by 11. It would just change my documents back.
Most family trees have cousin marriages. I had a great deal of difficulty linking a person who had two paths from my ancestry. I finally got it to more or less work after about twenty attempts. Only one of the relationships is reported, and not necessarily the one I wanted. I wanted umpteenth great grandmother, got umpteenth great aunt.
I will probably switch to my iMac and buy Reunion.
