Editorial Reviews for  'A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail'

Product Description
The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America–majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way–and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

Not a good book
The book is humorous in places, but most of this humor is at someone's expense. The author's superior than thou criticism for anyone or anything south of the New Jersey border gets old fast. In his view all southerners are inbread idiots, those who help him are uneducated morons, and the towns that befriend him are ugly places where demented banjo players are eyeing him for the kill. When he's not slamming those who help him along, he gives long and boring history lessons on the region, before he moves on to let us know why God doesn't exist and Darwin is a hero. He also quits the trail after 71 miles when he gets to Gatlinburg, TN, coming back to it infrequently to hike a day in PA here, or a couple of days in ME later. To me this was a sad book of failed dreams and cynical opinions, full of his lack of faith and insulting stabs at those who would help him along. If you want a book about the AT that will help you quit, this is it.

Entertaining walk with Bryson
Readers seem to be rating this book higher as it ages. Informative and humorous, it keeps your attention every minute. Some of the commentary on forest conservation, etc. is discouraging....Let's hope that situation has improved since the book was written, but that's doubtful, given the environmental record of the Bush administration.

Some photos would be a big plus. Viewing one of the great videos about the trail before reading is recommended.

Awesome
Bill Bryson is LOL square LOL funny. Nobody,i mean nobody, writes travelogues like Bill(can i call you Bill, Mr.Bryson?). A Walk in the Woods is an account of Bryson's 2000+ mile hike of the Appalachian Trail with his friend Katz. Katz makes for interesting company and the duo's adventures are hilarious to read. I hyucked as i devoured page after page, wanting it to never end. Not to mention the insight i gained into camping, environment, history, nature and the trail itself.

Hilarious
This book is hilarious and will have you laughing out loud at the antics of Bill and Katz and that does not happen with many books. It will also make you want to go hike the Appalachian Trail. I had my wife read the book and she too was laughing out loud. We both highly recommend it even if you are not into hiking or the outdoors at all.

All Time Favorite Book
Thank you to the stranger that recommended this book to me as I wandered through the Cincinnati Airport Book Store looking for something to keep me occupied.

This is a funny funny book and I enjoyed the visions that Bill Bryson gave.

I have given this to several people of different backgrounds and they too have added it to their list of favorite books.
About a year after I read the book I was standing in line to check in for yet another flight, and the woman in front of me was reading and laughing...when I peaked, she was reading this book too.
