In January 2003, Nicholas Sparks and his brother Micah set off on a three-week trip around the world. It was to mark a milestone in their lives, for at 37 and 38 respectively, they were now the only surviving members of their family. As Nicholas and Micah travel the globe, the intimate story of their family unfolds in the details of the untimely deaths of their parents and only sister. Beautiful book! |
|
I read this book at a time in my life when I was feeling pretty low. My mother had recently died and I was overwhelmed with that experience. This book showed me that my struggles were so insignificant to the struggles that some other people have. This book grounded me, gave me hope and inspired me. I am so appreciative to Mr. Sparks for taking me on this around the world adventure with him and his brother and for sharing this touching, real life story with me and other readers. A fun journey |
I was initially turned on to Nicholas Sparks because my girlfriend told me that I have a similar writing style as him, which naturally piqued my curiosity.
I picked up one of her many copies of his books and started reading Three Weeks w/ my Brother. You can imagine my surprise when noticing uncanny similarities to our writing styles, not to mention sense of humor. I'll be honest, I preferred the story of his life more than the trip itself. His roller-coaster life story has some interesting parallels to my novel, The Domino Effect, as you could probably guess by the title.
I liked reading 'Three Weeks' so much that I've since read several others, namely: A Walk to Remember and Message in a Bottle.
Sparks definitely has a uniqueness about him. Even though his storylines aren't terribly original, there is always something about them that draws the reader in. That is a rare talent.

an emotional memoir |
Having not read any of Nicholas Sparks' other work, but knowing from hearsay that his books are in the vein of romantic dramas and tragic tales, I was expecting something sappy.
Well this book has its moments of sap, but it's not bad.
This memoir, for one thing, is well written and easy to get through. But its a pretty emotional memoir. Nicholas Sparks, like everybody else in the world, endures ups and downs in his life. But is highs cant even compare to the lows. Not even making his first million dollars can compare to losing his mom at 47 years old or his sister at 33. Its interesting to read how he copes because, you the reader can relate to times in your life when you might have had to cope similarly. The rollercoaster of life gets to us all.. how we choose to deal with it is always different. Seeing how he dealt with it was inspirational, and made for a good read.
One thing I found to be interesting was finding out why it was important that he is on this trip with his brother. Without taking away too much surprise for those who havent read it I will say, when you realize why it reminds you of the importance of family.
And it makes you feel like you should reach out to your own family.
Good book. Enjoyed it. And would recommend to others. |
